Iftikhar Ahmad Salaam As long as Muslim children keep on attending state schools with non-Muslim monolingual teachers, there will be no end to forced marriages and honour killing. Muslim youths born and educated in Britain find themselves cut off from their cultural, linguistic and Islamic identities, are unable to distinguish between forced marriages and arranged marriages. According to Islamic traditions and British law, the children should be educated according to the needs and demands of their parents. It is crucial that Muslim children should be educated in state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models. They need to be well versed in Standard English to follow the National Curriculum and go for higher studies and research to serve humanity. They need to be well versed in Arabic to recite and understand the Holy Quran. They need to be well versed in Urdu and other community languages to keep in touch with their cultural roots and enjoy the beauty of their literature and poetry. Pakistani youths suffer more than others. It is essential that parents should get their youths married in Pakistan so that one of them who was born and educated in Pakistan, could teach and speak Urdu to their children. There is a positive co-relation between language and culture.
