Civil servants strike over ‘threat’ to jobs

Around 70 civil servants protested outside Luton Town Hall on Monday ‘to protect jobs’.

Staff from Luton Magistrates’ Court and Luton Crown Court downed tools for four hours for the first of two days of strikes.

The industrial action was organised by Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union, which said it was reacting to the changes made by the Government and Cabinet Office to the civil service compensation scheme.

PCS co-ordinator Geoff Webb said: “Many of our members took part in the strike and we are happy that we got our message across at the rally on Monday. We are determined to protect our jobs.”

Luton & Dunstable Express asked the courts how much disruption there had been but we were referred to Her Majesty’s Courts Service, which said: “No courts are closed as a result of industrial action.

“The majority of courts are sitting as planned and services are being maintained.

“While there has been some reduction in services, HMCS continuity plans are in place to minimise the impact on our customers.”
