False bomb alert forces plane bound for Luton to return

An aircraft heading to Luton Airport was forced to return to Romania after a false bomb scare this morning (March 17).

The Wizz Air flight, flying from Timisoara, had about 165 passengers on board, and was called back 15 minutes into its flight.

It is thought an anonymous call to Timisoara Airport was made shortly after the plane took off.

A Wizz Air spokeswoman said: "There was a false bomb alert this morning on our Timisoara - Luton flight.

"The crew of the Timisoara-Luton flight has received a bomb threat notification from ATC shortly after takeoff which turned out to be erroneous information. It was an alert related to another airline’s flight from Timisoara. The mistake was later admitted by the Romanian authorities.

"Despite of the false alert, the aircraft returned back and a thorough security check was carried out as safety always comes first. The aircraft was found clear. However, due to the overweight landing, the maintenance team had to perform a technical check on top of the security check. The passengers were disembarked and given food and drink according to EU Reg. 261/2004."

The flight has since departed and will be landing in Luton shortly
