Two arrested after laser attack

Two people were arrested on Saturday following a "laser attack" on the Bedfordshire Police helicopter due to the team work by officers on the ground and the force helicopter.

The helicopter was responding to an incident in Luton at around 10pm when it was subject to an 'attack' by a laser device being pointed at the aircraft.

The aircraft later returned to the area and was subject to a further attack.

The helicopter guided police officers on the ground leading to the arrest of a man and a woman in their twenties.

The pair was arrested for shining a light at an aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract under Section 222 of the Air Navigation Act 2009.

They were taken to Luton Police Station and later released on police bail until April 12.

PC Tim Aldous-Ball said: "This was an excellent piece of teamwork between our helicopter unit and officers on the ground, leading to the immediate arrest of the two suspects.

"This was a very serious incident and can cause an air incident, as laser devices can cause pilots to become distracted or disorientated.

"This was not only extremely dangerous for helicopter crew but also for the public and commercial airlines who use Luton Airport.

"We take this crime very seriously as lasers are not toys and pose a serious risk to all flight safety."
